What does it take to be a model citizen? The Necessary Stage explores this and more as they return with yet another original, thought-provoking work, Model Citizens which will be staged at The Necessary Stage Black Box from March 3 to 14, 2010.

The story unravels after a man stabs a Member of Parliament (MP) at a Meet-the-People Session. The focus of the narrative, however, is on three women – the man’s girlfriend, an Indonesian maid who wants to get married and become a Singapore citizen; the MP’s wife, who tries to cope with her husband’s injury and the media spotlight; and the maid’s employer, who is also struggling with her personal tragedy.

These three women may mean nothing to each other, but they need one another to survive. Are they all model citizens?

Model Citizens marks yet another milestone for Director Alvin Tan and Playwright Haresh Sharma, who have been working together for more than two decades on over 60 plays with The Necessary Stage. This brand new production features an all-female ensemble comprising theatre stalwarts Goh Guat Kian, Siti Khalijah and Karen Tan.

True to form of any of The Necessary Stage’s productions, Model Citizens looks at urgent contemporary issues in our society in this day and age, through an intricate study of human relationships. The play will be performed in English, Mandarin and Malay with English surtitles.
